Step by step

How to put a frame on a photo

Three steps, in the browser on your own phone, with nothing to install and no account to create. If you are the one running the campaign, the second part explains how to make the frame.

Someone sent you a campaign link

This is the common case: somebody shared an address and you want your photo with that frame on it.

  1. 1

    Open the campaign link

Whoever is running it shares an address that looks like framefy.pro/c/campaign-name, usually by message or in a story. It opens in the browser on your own phone, with nothing to install.

  2. 2

Pick your photo and adjust the crop

The compositing happens in your browser. You drag and zoom until the face sits where you want it, because the centre of the image is exactly the part the frame leaves clear.

  3. 3

    Download the finished image

The file comes out square, at the right size to become a profile picture on Instagram, WhatsApp or LinkedIn. Taking part needs no account and no email address.

You are the one making the frame

Here the artwork has to come out right, otherwise it ruins the photo of everyone who takes part.

  1. 1

    Start from a 1080 by 1080 square

That is the size that works as a profile picture on every network. Always work at it, and never scale a smaller piece up afterwards: scaling up blurs the edge, and it shows on everybody's photo.

  2. 2

Leave the middle clear for the face

A frame is a border. Text and elements belong at the edges, because the centre will be covered by the person's face. Picture a circle in the middle of the artwork: that is the area to leave alone.

  3. 3

Export as a PNG with a transparent background

This is the step that goes wrong most often. If the background comes out white instead of transparent, the artwork covers the whole photo and the person sees only the frame. Turn the background layer off before exporting, and check the result against a dark background.

  4. 4

Test it on a real photo before sharing

Upload the frame to the campaign and apply it to an actual photo of a face, not a grey square. Proportion mistakes and clipped text only show up there.

  5. 5

    Publish and share the link

With the frame in place, the campaign becomes a public address. That link is what goes out in messages and stories, not the artwork file.

The five mistakes that ruin the artwork

  • A white background instead of a transparent one, covering the whole photo.
  • Text in the middle of the artwork, disappearing behind the face.
  • A rectangular piece, cropped once it becomes a round profile picture.
  • Low resolution scaled up to 1080, leaving the edge blurry.
  • Fine detail hard against the border, lost in the circular crop some networks apply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put a frame on a photo without downloading an app?

By opening the campaign link in your browser. The frame is applied to your photo right there and you download the finished image. There is nothing to install and no sign-up to take part.

Is my photo stored on a server somewhere?

The compositing happens in your browser. The photo is only uploaded if you choose to publish it in the campaign's public gallery, and even then whoever runs the campaign approves it before it appears.

I opened the link and the frame covered my whole photo. What happened?

The artwork was saved with a white background instead of a transparent one. That is a mistake by whoever made the frame, not by you. Let them know to export it again as a PNG with the background layer turned off.

I want to run my own campaign. Where do I start?

Create an account, upload the frame as a transparent PNG at 1080 by 1080, and publish. You get the public link and can follow how many people changed their profile picture.
